We spend a lot of time looking at the amazing photos in contests all the time but when our blogger friends at Thebudgetwanderers.net nominated us to take part in the “Capture The Colour” contest, we were excited o participate and share our colors. The contest challenges entrants to submit photos that capture 5 colors; blue, red, yellow, white and green. ….but without further adieu, here we go!
Hanging confidently out of the back of a tuk-tuk, camera firmly pressed to my face, we blazed through a bumpy Mekong River village in Phnom Penh. I don’t normally feel this comfortable photographing people but something about these folks told me that they wouldn’t mind. The endless stream of smiles that flooded our views as we sputtered was breathtaking and humbling all at once. Nearing the end of town we were chased down by two boys that offered us the most sincere gift they had to give, a smile. It was a photo that I was lucky to have taken, not because it was a great shot, but because of the moment shared and the memory it created. You can read the full story here
As a traveler, you have the unique opportunity to step away from the confines of your perceived “reality” and into a world within a world that widens your scope of humanity. Walking through the backstreets of a southern Cambodian town I spotted this gentlemen. The contrast of his weathered skin and the vibrant red cloth that offered him shelter told me a special story about him. With a friendly wave, he explained to me without speaking that his life, although very different from my own, was filled with color and happiness and so without much of anything, he was a man with everything. She stood behind a building near a rest stop on our way to Dalat, Vietnam. She peered curiously around the building as the bus unloaded to catch of glimpse of the passengers. We decided on potato chips for lunch that day as the alternative of deep fried spider seemed a bit heavy. Without hesitation, my wife approached the little girl. We shared our snack with her and without hesitation, she modeled her colorful hat for me. You can read the full story here.
The trees turned to hills, the hills turned to dirt, and the dirt turned to pristine mounds of flowing red sand for as far as the eye could see. This was the view of the back of our rented scooter as we cruised the roadways of Mui Ne, Vietnam. Arriving at a place that I can only describe as the planet Mars on a sunny day, we were greeted by several 4 inch smiles on 4 foot bodies. A group of young entrepreneurs pitched their sled rental business to us and after a few minutes of laughter and bargaining, we were sold. They guided to the fastest slop and were kind enough to offer (at no additional charge), photography service of our out of this world experience. You can read the full story here.
Children are always so much fun to photograph. They have an inner light that burns bright and regardless of where they live and under what circumstances, they shine. Traveling to the Angkor Wat in Siem Reap I passed this little boy enjoying a trip with his mother during the early morning hours. Wrapped in a funky pair of pj’s, he reminded me that while life may not always be as warm and comfy as we might like, sometimes the best thing we can do is hold on tight and enjoy the ride.
